I have lived in the Pittsburgh area for about 6 years now. I've been through quite a bit since I moved here. When I first moved here I have'nt hit up the bars nor clubs until like after a year of living here. Now, yes I am from a bigger city with a decent gay scene/community and even a well known gay neighborhood. So I grew used to that . I know Pittsburgh is a smaller major city or semi-major city so the GLBT establishments are small far and few inbetween compared to larger cities or some other cities the same size. Due to the fact that Pittsburgh is eclectic, and somewhat artsy you would think it would have alot more resources then it does. I must say it is progressing. It has alot of potential though. But due to this cities past , economic situation, and decline of population the mentality of the natives are kinda behind. Especially in race relations.... Saloon and Club Hot "now Tilden" was not the first bar/club I have went to. But I went there with my ex and friends numorous times when the saloon first opened in '06 and club hot upstairs with out any membership. I NEVER liked NEITHER from the get go. They are both small crampy, most of staff is rude, and the only reason why I went as of recently is because Tilden is UNFORTUNETLY the most popular after hours gay spot in town. I am a 29 y/o well educated BLACK gay male who is known to be very friendly, polite, down to earth, and fun loving. I always like to make people around me laugh, be comfortable and have fun. I haven't ever had membership to Tilden but always got in especially when I'm with friends. I have heard a couple rumors that the owner as well as some of staff were kind of RACIST and stand offish to blacks and other people that were perhaps not attractive. Which is not uncommon in the gay scene no matter what city you're in. But there are blacks in there all the time. Atleast everytime I've went there. simply due to the fact that discrimination is illegal.... So they try to keep in on the hush hush. There have been times that I've been to either saloon or tilden where I was patiently waiting to be served by a bartender and I was obviously ignored and or skipped over. Which I haven't let get to me. If I felt that was happening I just go to the other bartender or another bar all together. And that happened to me again on Friday night Oct 2nd when I went in 941 Saloon to just ask for membership and then a beer. The bar was pretty unusually empty, and the stool I was sitting at not many people were close by. I was STILL not being tended to until about 5 minutes. As of recently due to me being single again, and starting to go there frequently on Fri, and or Sat nights I decided to try to get membership. I was told TWICE that no cards were available and to come back another day when the will be. But I was still alowed to Tilden (after hours required membership) upstairs this last Friday night Oct 2nd by some women bouncer that I've never seen before which was nice and not uncommon. Now like most people I tend to go there TIPSY since the damn place is so shitty. Like I said its a spot where most of the gay club goers and bar hoppers end up on a Fri or Sat night, and that's the ONLY reason why I go up there. So went in the the club and got a ginger ale at the back bar, then chilled socialized and decided to get the final drink of the night at the crowded front bar. The bartender who was behind it was the guy who took super long to tend to be downstairs earlier that evening. It was packed but he was tending to everyone in a pretty orderly fashion EXCEPT me and 2 other black boys that night. I noticed it right away. I had to tap him a few times to get his attention in order to get served. Then he served this white kid in which I knew before who came before me. I WENT OFF.... me being tipsy didn't help. He finally served me. Then I noticed he STILL did not serve the black kid next to me. I told the kid in which I did'nt know that "its ok, I'll get him for you". When I finally got the asswholes attention I just cursed him out. In return he charged out of bar to get help to kick me out. So I got escorted out. turned around to inform woman bouncer who happened to be manager or owner what happened, and she said "I don't what your talking about we have plenty of black people that come in here all of the time" in which they do. But you can tell by the look in her eyes and body language that she knew that I my being kicked out was racially motivated she just didn't wanna atmit it to avoid a law suit. Anyways, I will look into seeing what I can do to see if that place can be investigated. Because what happened that evening to me was WRONG. And there really is no ROOM for a DL racism in establishments ESPECIALLY in the GAY COMMUNITY. I know the alot of caucasians in Pittsburgh are full of bigotry but WE'RE ALL GAY HERE. I STRONGLY recommend whoever reads this to boycott 941 Saloon & Tilden. Believe me compared to the other more popular bars in the city you won't be missing a DAMN THING.

Club is a rip-off, membership scheme is a joke.
If you know someone you get in free. Others pay.... Getting a drink is impossible, decor is tacky.

First, you have to be a memeber or with one to get in, as if its some VIP place. Then they say htey are open till 3 but they call last call at like 230. And the bartenders are the rudest , snobby employees, rivalling that dirtbag Kevin at Luckys...And most of the guys are so inebriated, they will stop at nothing to a)get down your pants or b)tell you how ugly/trashy you are without even knowing you...The only thing I enjoy is the dancing...

I'm mainly writing this to counter the negative comments.I've always had a great time here and it's definately best if your a litte tipsy.I will agree that the staff is somewhat curt but I find this true of most gay places.Someone commented that they'd rather go to Jitters (an after-hours speakeasy) I've encountered far ruder people there than at H.O.T. I mean just getting past Nancy (the owner) can be rought she's like a troll guarding a bridge.and you pay 10 bucks for every visit.H.O.T wavied their cover a while ago If you pay at the door thats for a year membership. In the last 7 years I've never paid to get in.

WAY understaffed on the weekends. It seems that if you do not know the bartender, you do not get a drink.. and after paying $10 to get in the door that makes me mad. I'd rather find the striaght after hours or go to jitters.

Staff is rude and the people at the door are incriminating. It takes almost the entire time that you are there to get a drink from the bar (always understaffed). It seems as the owners knows that there is no other alternative to thier bar and can get away with the way they treat customers. ICK. AVOID.

Unfortunately, this is the last stand on a Saturday night. It only gets crowded after bars close at 2. You have exactly 1 hour to make your way to the very crowded bar before the close at 3AM. I have had mixed nights there. The staff is very rude. Sometimes it's a private club sometimes it's a free-4-all, depending on how much money they can make off of you. Most of the customers have rolled in from elsewhere and are out to finish their party. There are some looking to hook up...hit or miss

Club HOT is totally NOT! For one, when you get to the door they tell you that you must have a membership card to enter. Not very welcoming to an out of towner. Then if they're nice enough to let you in, you have to ask someone with a membership card to buy you a drink -- and it's still expensive! Plus, the music was like 10 years old club hits. Really awful place with snotty people. Avoid!

Enter this dive at your own risk. Some a-hole stole my coat and, rather than start a fight, I asked the management for help. They told me "You're on your own." Nice to know they care about their customers and provide a safe environment, NOT!.
