Over the past several years, social movements around the world have been challenging power in radical ways, by refusing simple demands and seeking to go beyond politics and activism-as-usual. From the Arab Spring in the Middle East and North Africa to anti-austerity protests in Europe and Latin America, to Occupy Everything in the U.S. and elsewhere, people are fed up with the ways capitalism, the state, and the many other interconnected oppressions we face daily stop us from realizing a better world. We see resistance that is confrontational yet simultaneously working to prefigure new possibilities that strive for a collective autonomy, balancing freedom and more egalitarian relationships through experimentation and a practice of mutual aid. What are ways to keep this going? How are practices of gender, sexuality, and new forms of kinship tools for subverting normativity? How do we challenge or transform single-issue or reformist efforts into a queer resistance that strives for liberation for all? Join us for a discussion on queering politics to radically remake society.
On Friday, Nov. 15, we will be discussing a talk by Jack Halberstam, leading gender and queer theorist, entitled, "No Church in the Wild: Queer Anarchy and Gaga Feminism." Halberstam is a professor of English, American Studies and Ethnicity and Gender Studies at the University of Southern California and works in the areas of popular, visual and queer culture with an emphasis on subcultures.
Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIL9k8dCtwU
Then join us on Friday, Nov. 15th from 46pm at Biddle’s Escape in Point Breeze.
Please watch the talk before the discussion!
