The "THIC Event"
(Trans History IN Color)
On this day we show up as our spirit Selves or Trans Ancestors. We connect with those who have transitioned this realm of existence. We honor our connection to them by our embodiment of our perception of the spirit that was the driving voice behind their resilience. We come with something we wish to pass along, whether it is a word, a song, a story, or something tangible, like an earring or a special, symbolic rock or stone -- and we pass it on to someone whom we feel represents Tomorrow. This concept is not about age, but rather state of being. We commune, break bread together, and fellowship.
TDOR was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-trans hatred or prejudice.
We choose to honor those who have come before us..
the ancestors who wrap their arms around us..
&& those who protect us.
The event was first held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the âRemembering Our Deadâ web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hesterâs murder â like most anti-transgender murder cases â has yet to be solved.
Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender, each was a victim of violence based on bias against trans folks.
Through the vigil, we celebrate our love, resilience, and brilliance.
We are divine excellence and magnificently designed.
